Do you DARE?
Hi all, students from one of Jennifer Bloomquist's linguistics classes are asking for "DARE." If you remember your reference class from way back when--or just can recall from experience at the desk--DARE stands for Dictionary of American Regional English, which we have in the reference stacks at PE2843 .D52 1985 (it's a 4-volume set).
One class of her students also are asking for a couple of other titles, "Juba to Jive," etc. The prof hasn't listed full titles on the assignment sheet (although maybe she did in the syllabus), so sometimes the students come up blank when searching by title. A keyword search returned all the titles they were looking for, however.
DARE is a pretty cool resource, definitely worth checking out. There are lots of neat definitions of regional words and expressions, as well as "linguistic directing" regarding how or where the term arose or developed.

Carolyn has added "DARE" as an alternate title for the catalog entry for the Dictionary of American Regional English. j
