FYS 102-3 Assignment

Hi All,
This week you might see students from Kathy Cain's FYS 102-3: The World's Children. The 16 students in the class will be working on a semester long research project with staggered due dates. The first part of the project requires them to visit the Reference Desk and work with a librarian to help them find two scholarly sources on children and the region of their choice (i.e. I just helped a pair look for resources on children in Israel).

Kathy has asked that we have her students sign in when they visit the reference desk. I have attached a pink IL sign in sheet to the clipboard at the desk - so please have the students sign this if they come visit with you.

The students will be working in pairs, so this will result in 8 reference desk transactions. The part of the assignment that they are currently working on is listed below, but if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Also, I should probably mention that the entire class will be coming in on the 17th for an IL session - so don't worry, we'll be talking about narrowing down topics. =)

I think that's it. Thanks! Meggan

Assignment
With your partner, choose a region or country in the developing world that interests you. Visit the library and meet with a reference librarian as described below. Working individually and using the sources you have found, prepare a 3-4 page paper describing childhood and family life in that area. You should describe interesting customs and parenting practices, belief systems that guide family life, and ways in which childhood differs for the wealthy and poor. You are required to use and cite at least two scholarly sources. Due Fri., Sept. 10.
